The cold trickles in. We try to bar against it. We close the door and every window. We grab blankets and pillows, wrapping ourselves like the mummies of Egypt. We buy heaters and turn up the furnace. We try to fight back with the fire in the fireplace. We just want it to stay outside, away from our exposed toes and red nose. Yet, we can't keep it away. No, it will never go back. For once it is in, it will stay. We can try to fight. Use all of our assests against it, like it is an unnatural attacker. However, it is all in vain. Whether we admit it or not, we will never win. We can pretend, for moments at a time, that it doesn't bother us. That it won't change anything. It will though. It will eventually change everything. But, until that day, we will continue to fight. Fight like we will never give up. Evetually we will, it will beat everything out of us. Evetually we will lie down, embrace the cold for what it is. Until then, fight. Fight until our knuckles bleed and our eyes beg for sleep. Fight for the life that is so easily slipping away into the cold.
The tress all fell one at a time, as if living dominions. There was no hope of redemption. They were all going to fall, whether something interfered or not. For an outsider, watching was the only thing left to do. Boom. Boom. Boom. The sounds of the deaths echoed through the forest as more and more left to their doom. Animals scattered as the breaking trees fell ever closer to their beloved homes. Deer dashed and foxes slinked through the already fallen, attempting to dodge the falling. Run, run, run. It was never simpler than that. No longer where the political divides of the forest important. Deer and wolves ran together. Rabbits and foxes fled side by side, not bothering to worry about the other's presence. Owls flew directly over scattering mice yet never swooped down to disturb them. The distruction was more relevant than the divides. Never had the forest been this way and, until the next event of tumbling trees, it never would be again. For only distruction has the power to bring everyone together.
